Biomedical Engineering student wins ‘Junior Nobel Prize’
13 November 2024

Balvinder Dhillon, a fourth year Biomedical Engineering student, has won the Global Award for Engineering at the Global Undergraduate Awards.
Nicknamed the 'Junior Nobel Prize’, the Global Undergraduate Awards is the world's leading academic awards programme which recognises top undergraduate work, shares this work with a global audience and connects students across cultures and disciplines.
Winners are selected from anonymous worldwide submissions by a panel of expert judges. There were over 2300 submissions from 48 countries this year. Balvinder’s research from her third-year project on ‘Developing Bioresorbable Drug-Eluting Stents with Organ-On-A-Chip Validation’, supervised by Professor Thomas Iskratsch, was the winning entry in the Engineering category.
Balvinder travelled to Dublin to accept the award in person from the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, and be a guest at the gala dinner.
“It is fantastic to see our students like Balvinder applying their learning and making a tangible difference in the world,” said Professor Colin Bailey, President and Principal of Queen Mary University of London.
“At Queen Mary, we know that groundbreaking ideas can come from anyone, and we are honoured to support such exceptional individuals.”
