Another successful taster course has been carried out on the 15th July 2005 for a group of Year 11 and 12 students from Gravesend Grammar School, Kent. Their Head of Chemistry teacher, Elaine Cork has arranged this special event with Ms Cath Pedley, our Administrator Coordinator. With the dedication and support from many teaching assistants, this event had been very well received. The activities included Thermally Responsive Polymer, Dental Filling and Impression, Finger Printing and Hair Analysis. The series of activities are chosen to give the students a taste of the different application of Materials Science and Engineering. A Problem Based Learning (PBL) activity has also been created by our team of teaching assistants to expose the students to the different types of materials such as plastic, fibre reinforced plastic and metals. The PBL involved making the lightest spring using the above mentioned materials to launch a 2g plasticine ball the furthest.
