To better align its research activities with the UK grand challenges, the Queen Mary University of London Research Highways and the Faculty of Science and Engineering strategic research schemes, the School of Engineering and Materials Science has restructured its research into four centres in Bioengineering, Sustainable Engineering, Intelligent Transport and Engineering & Materials Education. The websites of the new centres were launched on 7th December, and the official launch event will take place in March 2023, during the Industrial liaison forum.

“The new centre structure will enable the School to have critical mass and international visibility in those strategic areas, facilitating our bids for large collaborative research grants and centres for doctoral training (CDT). Our available resources including recruitment, space, and PhD studentships will all be aligned with supporting these priority areas to stimulate strategic growth and deliver the University’s 2030 Strategy, ”said Prof Hazel Screen, Head of the School.

An immediate priority of the new research centres is to increase the visibility and ensure the world-leading research outputs and impacts reach key stake holders promptly. The school performed extremely well in the recent 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), with the Engineering unit ranked 7th in the UK out of 89 universities that were assessed. The research output was ranked 2nd in the UK.
