Engineers in SEMS demonstrate the world’s fastest and thinnest electrically tuneable lens
A joint team between SEMS (Dr Federico Carpi’s group) and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne has just demonstrated the world’s thinnest and fastest tuning optical lens made of electro-responsive smart materials.

The lens is entirely made of silicone rubber and is inspired by the human crystalline lens. The ultrafast lens might find applications in cameras for consumer electronics and 3D imaging techniques.

The paper is featured on the inside cover of the journal Advanced Functional Materials.
