Engineering diploma students from Sussex Downs College visited the department of Materials at Queen Mary, University of London on 19th November 2003. The budding young materials scientists took part in numerous activities, including;
· Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
· Light microscopy including microstructural analysis of pro-eutectoid carbon steels
· Tensile testing

These 'hands-on' workshops help develop an interest in material science while demonstrating a broader horizon of engineering.
Academic staff and PhD students alike helped organise this event and with feedback like 'I was impressed with the preparation, effort, the efficiency and kindness of all we came across', personifies not only a desire for the subject but also the fun that can be had while achieving a degree.

Queen Mary, University of London received a maximum rating of 4 in all categories from Sussex Down College in the IOM3 open day program.
