Available PhD studentships in mechanics of bone at the nano-scale

16 August 2007

A number of PhD studentships are available for studies in the area of nano-mechanics of bone within the Department of Materials and allied cross-departmental Centre of Materials Research. The Department of Materials has a long tradition of world class research in biomaterials and is currently in the process of investing over £3million in experimental facilities to support this activity. The studentships will develop and use novel advanced techniques, such as scanning probe and electron microscopy, for understanding structure-property relationships in mineralized biomaterials at the nano-scale.

Applicants possessing or about to receive a good honours degree (2.1 and above) or equivalent are invited to apply. Relevant skills and background in biomaterials, mechanics and solid state physics would be an advantage. Enthusiasm for studying at the interface between biology, physics and materials is essential.

The projects will be fully supported by the EPSRC, with a yearly stipend of £14,300, and primarily supervised by Dr Asa Barber of the Department of Materials, with support from the School of Medicine and Dentistry. The funding is for UK/EU nationals although overseas students demonstrating academic excellence will also be considered.

Informal discussions and should be directed to Dr Asa Barber (a.h.barber@qmul.ac.uk). Applications should include a full CV and cover letter, which should be sent to Kirsty Johnston on or before the deadline of 10th September.
