Colloidal nanocrystals with controllable surface properties are attractive objects for use as building blocks in different functional structures. Layer by layer assembly of water-soluble nanocrystals in combination with polyelectrolytes is a powerful technique allowing fabrication of multi-layered structures in a very defined and controllable manner. We present an overview of the layer-by-layer assembled structures comprising luminescent nanocrystals and demonstrate applicability of this method in creation of luminescent coatings both on flat substrates and on colloidal polymer spheres. Different application aspects of these structures ranging from resonant energy transfer based devices to biological markers will be discussed.
