Dr Paul Cusdin, Head of CFD of Alpine Formula 1, will give a guest lecture for EMS602 on Thu, 31 October 2024, 15-1600, Skeel LT

Beyond the students on EMS602, this will be a very interesting talk for all those working in CFD and/or Formula 1.

Three decades of CFD in Formula One: past, present and future.

Aerodynamics are a key performance differentiator for Formula One cars, and CFD is a crucial part in a team’s pursuit of absolute performance. We’ll chart the progression of CFD application in Formula One from 2005 and offer our opinion on how the next decade might look, as the sport seeks to influence and support the next-generation of CFD tools. From purpose-built data centres housing TOP500 clusters to the potential of GPU compute, we’ll describe the technological journey, the influence on car performance and the tools that CFD can’t (yet) readily replicate in motorsport. Finally, we’ll look at the potentially disruptive scope of AI in the sector and offer some insights into how teams are using their huge dedicated CFD compute capacity to train models.
