Microwave Heating in the Chemical and Process Industries

Date: Thursday 20 October 2005 16:00 - 17:00
Location:UPC

Dr Sam Kingman of Nottingham university

Sam will begin by talking about the need for more efficient processing in
order to meet the requirements of increased sustainability in the chemical
industries. Microwave heating is one such way to do this and indeed many
people have investigated the use of microwave heating in their processes.
Unfortunately, this work has often utilised non-specific domestic microwave
equipment and therefore the results have been misleading and lead to the
conclusion that microwave heating does not offer benefits. By using several
specific examples I will illustrate how by taking a multi-disciplinary
approach through the collaboration of process, electrical and materials
engineers and chemists for example ,much more rapid and successful process
development can occur.
