10:30 – 11:30 IBM presents ‘Design Thinking Challenge’ Competition Kick-Off

Leading Technology company IBM will be hosting a consulting case competition exclusively for SEMS & SPCS students. In this kick-off session, Jon McNamara (IBM Master Inventor and UK University Lead) will be outlining the challenge and then guiding participants through the principles of ‘Design Thinking’ and running a problem solving session where you’ll utilise methods such as ‘Empathy Maps, Ideation and Prioritisation to generate solutions to the challenge. Participants will work in multi-disciplinary groups over the course of the week and present their proposed solution back to IBM on March 14th (9:30 – 10:30). All participants will also have access to IBM’s Design Thinking Practitioner Badge – an industry recognised qualification.

This session, specifically for individuals who have undertaken a large project component as part of their degree, is designed to help you best ‘sell’ your project in a variety of contexts. Participants will understand the need to articulate your project and research interests, in varied situations and tailored to varied audiences. We’ll be looking at how best to describe your project on application and in professional settings, as well as identifying the soft-skills developed through your research project and how to utilise these in an interview setting.

Whether you’re currently in the process of applying for internship, placement or graduate opportunities or just want a strong CV on hand, join for this session on ‘Crafting your strongest CV’ delivered by Pash Selopal, Careers Consultant at QMUL. By the end of this session, participants will have a clear understanding of how employers screen CVs, how to tailor your CV to the role you’re applying for and understand what ‘good evidence’ looks, as well as identity and market your own selling points.

Join QMUL Alumnae Mehreen Khan (University Recruiter) and Sarah Allaf (Strategy & Consulting Analyst) from Accenture who will be talking about opportunities in their Technology division. As well as an overview of Accenture, there will be a focus on the transferability of your STEM degree to Technology consulting as well as Sarah sharing their experiences on the graduate programme, journey from QMUL to Accenture and how they were able to showcase their passion and motivation for the Consulting Industry coming from a STEM background.

This workshop will focus on the benefits of gaining work experience and undertaking an work experience, whether a ‘Summer Internship’ or ‘Year in Industry’ during your degree programme. In this session we’ll be focusing on what you can do to be able to set yourself up for success to stand out in the recruitment and selection process, understand how employers assess and how you can demonstrate these through academic and non-academic experience you have or can gain prior to applying.
