Spiking Neural Networks and Computational Neural Mass Models

Date: Wednesday 26 June 2019 14:00 - 15:00

Location: SEMS Seminar Room

ABSTRACT:

We have been using the SpiNNaker neuromorphic hardware to design spiking neural networks to emulate several biological circuits. We have explored simulating the Lateral Geniculate Nucleus and Basal Ganglia Circuit on the SpiNNaker machine. In this presentation, I will talk about the recent publications along these lines. I will also talk about our work on neural mass computational models, mainly to simulate disease related EEG markers.

BIOGRAPHY:

Basabdatta Sen Bhattacharya is currently working as an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the BITS Pilani Goa campus. Basab received her PhD in Computer Science from University of Manchester, UK, in 2008; M.Eng. in Computer Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, in 2002; B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from NIT, Silchar, India in 1992.

Prior to the current position, she has worked as a Researcher with the SpiNNaker team at the School of Computer Science, University of Manchester, UK (2016-2018), Lecturer of Electrical Engineering at the University of Lincoln, UK (2012-2016). Before switching to academia, she worked in the industry in India from 1992-1999.

Her research comprises primarily of brain-inspired computational models that can serve the dual purpose of:
- identifying and understanding cellular level dysfunction in brain disorders;
- designing and building partially cognitive/intelligent machines/devices.
