Dr. E. L. Doubrovski: Should it blend? Opportunities and Challenges of Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing

Abstract. Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D Printing, is increasingly being used as a production method. Being a digital manufacturing technique, it offers some unique capabilities for the products that are made. The ability to make products with a highly complex geometry has often been mentioned as a major advantage. We argue that, in addition to geometry, the ability to control material composition can potentially change how we design and manufacture products. However, for designers to apply these capabilities, adequate design tools are lacking. By discussing research and design projects at the Delft University of Technology, both novel applications and shortcomings of 3D printing will be examined. Findings from these projects set the research agenda for Design for Additive Manufacturing.
