1st year PhD day: Maximising the Impact of Conferences and Networking

On the 15th July 2014 the Doctoral College are running a half-day event for all first year PhD students. This will be a chance for your students to meet, chat and work with people from different disciplines, and to build on the connections that your students made at their induction and throughout their first year.

At this stage in their research some of your students may have already attended conferences, and many of your students will be thinking about attending and or contributing to professional events. This event is aimed at highlighting the importance of professional networks, and introducing students to the key values, attributes and mechanisms of building an effective professional network. This event will also provide an opportunity for students to book a one-to-one slot with Dr Tracy Bussoli, the Careers Consultant for Researchers, to help students think and plan about their future careers.

The building and maintaining of effective professional networks during the PhD programme significantly increases students career opportunities after completion of a PhD. The workshop present a chance for 1st year students to discuss early, within their PhD studies, how to maximise their networking opportunities and utilise their time effectively.

We would like to welcome students to come ready to discuss their work and share ideas on how to maximise the impact of collaborative working and networking events.

Course Content:

Networking and collaboration are the lifeblood of research. In order to maximise the impact of your work it is vital that you disseminate it effectively, and also you start to foster collaborative links, both within research and more widely. This session, facilitated by Dr Steven Hutchinson, will help you explore how to do this in the right way for you and your work.

Specifically, the course will address these questions
• How can I network more effectively?
• How can I build collaborative links within my field?
• How can I get the most out of conferences?
• How can I start to grow a network that will potentially maximise the impact of my work?


Career Consultancy - one to one career advice from Dr Tracy Bussoli, Careers Consultant for Researchers, during these sessions students will be offered a range of services which include:

• CV Advice, for academic and non-academic CVs
• General Careers Advice; advising students on how to focus their energy during the early years of their PhD
• Networking Advise; how to develop relationship during the PhD programme and how to build and maintain a professional network

All 1st Year PhD students are expected to attend this event.
