Nature generates a widespread variety of materials with well-ordered structure, elaborate geometries, adaptive behaviour, and outstanding properties. What if we had the possibility to design materials with truly hierarchical order from the molecular to the macroscale? What if we could precisely recreate functional 3D environments? What if we had the possibility to create complex materials using mechanisms similar to those found during tissue morphogenesis? This talk will describe some of the new approaches our group is aiming to develop towards creting materials that exhibit complex 3D architectures, hierarchical order, self-healing ability, and the capacity to undergo morphogenesis.
