Modelling and Simulation in Engineering Systems: Tribodynamics

Modern engineering systems need to combine a variety of – often – conflicting attributes: higher power output, reduced weight, energy efficiency, durability to name but a few. A determining factor for the healthy operation of such systems is how well protection can be established against the development of vibro-impacts and undesired friction conditions between their interacting components. The presence of lubricant between the contacting surfaces is a common protection measure. A comprehensive analysis calls for coupling between the dynamics of solids/deformable bodies with the tribological behaviour of their lubricated conjunctions. The seminar aims to provide an alternative perspective on the modelling of multi-physics, multi-scale engineering problems so that light is shed on the encountered physical phenomena.
