Prof Gang SUN, Recent Aerodynamic Design work for the C-919

Date: Tuesday 11 December 2012 15:00 - 16:00

Location: Francis Bancroft 3.22

Introduction to the Department of Mechanics & Engineering Science, Fudan University
Prof. Gang SUN, Deputy Director of the Aircraft Design Institute, Fudan University, China

The presentation will give an overview of the Department and the research it does with its key partners. In particular, we will focus on the aerodynamic design and development work for the Chinese aircraft project C-919. Aspects covered will include the role of CFD in aircraft design, the overall aerodynamic design platform, wing design including supercritical aerofoils, multi-element aerofoils, high-lift devices, ground effects and pylon/nacelle design. We will also present work on device design for separation control. The presentation will conclude with an overview of current research activities.

Professor Gang Sun is the deputy director of the aircraft design institute at Fudan University, the director of China Aerodynamics Committee and the China Computational Fluid Dynamics Committee. He has worked at Northwestern Polytechnical University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM). His research focuses on fluid mechanics and aircraft design. Nowadays, he is active in the design of the Chinese aircraft project C-919 and coordinating more than twenty related projects.
