Low cost and eco-processing of nanomaterials and their applications

This paper presents the low cost and innovative processing of highly pure nanomaterials using chemical vapour deposition (CVD) based methods [1]. The emerging non vacuum Electrostatic Spray Assisted Vapour Deposition (ESAVD) based processing of nanomaterials will also be highlighted [1,2]. ESAVD is a variant of CVD process which involves spraying atomised precursor droplets across an electric field. Nanostructured powders or films can be deposited by tailoring the charged precursor to undergo either homogeneous or heterogeneous chemical reaction, respectively during the deposition process. Nanostructured dense, porous multilayer and nanocomposite coatings can be manufactured by tailoring the deposition parameters. The ESAVD process can be performed in an open atmosphere, without the need for sophisticated reactor and vacuum systems, with high deposition efficiency (above 90%). ESAVD is a low-temperature atomistic deposition method, which can produce high purity materials with structural control at the nanometer scale level. The structure, stoichiometry and crystallinity can be controlled by optimising the processing conditions. The technical viability and the commercial potential of the ESAVD process to be scaled up to large areas and large scale production will be presented. The process, structure, properties and applications of nanomaterials fabricated by ESAVD for aerospace, surface engineering, solar cells, fuel cells, electronics, display, biomedical and healthcare will be highlighted.
