Applications of biomedical particles in detection of hazardous materials

Hydroxyapatite (HA) has been widely used as biomedical ceramics for clinical applications. However, as it has high activity in ion-exchange, HA can be effectively used in sensors for detection of hazardous materials. The morphology of HA plays an important role in the ion-exchange behaviors. By using biological and polymer templates, HA clusters of different morphology can be conveniently synthesized. The detection limits of hazardous materials, such as Cr2+, Pb2+ and As3+, are significantly improved by using HA clusters of special morphology. The presentation summarizes the author’s recent work on the syntheses of HA clusters and the detection of hazardous materials. Also, major R&D activities in the State Key Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy, Central South University will also be introduced briefly.
