Research in Complex Multiphase Flows and Capsule Dynamics
This talk consists of three parts. The first part is about the simulation of multiphase flows with moving contact lines, using novel level-set and diffuse interface approaches with adaptive mesh refinement. Classical moving contact line theories are validated and modified; a large scale simulation model is developed. The second part of this talk will focus on numerical and experimental study of fluid flow and heat transfer in novel microchannel heat sinks, which significantly enhance the heat transfer performance with only moderate pressure drop penalty increase, when compared with traditional designs. In the last part of this talk, the dynamic motion of a three dimensional capsule, which is modelled as a Newtonian liquid droplet enclosed by a thin hyper-elastic membrane, in simple shear flow is studied numerically, using a hybrid immersed-boundary and multi-block lattice-Boltzmann method. The results suggest the well-known steady tank-treading mode does not exist for non-spherical capsules and a new shear rate induced transition from swinging mode to tumbling mode is observed and explained.
