Physics Seminar: Image Enhancement: Dynamic Range Optimisation

Date: Friday 26 October 2007 16:00 - 17:00
Location:112, Physics building

Our seminar this Friday will be given by Slava Chesnokov, one of the founders of Apical Ltd, UK, the title is “Image Enhancement: Dynamic Range Optimisation”.

Abstract reads:
“Apical’s image processing module iridix provides high-quality contrast optimisation for a wide range of image capture and display devices. For displays, it addresses the problem of rendering high-quality video on displays of limited dynamic range, without loss of detail or contrast and without clipping of color gamut. For cameras, it allows images to be captured which look natural just as seen by the user’s own eyes, even in uneven or otherwise difficult illumination conditions. Its proprietary dynamic range control algorithms adaptively apply a different tone correction curve to every pixel in the input video frame. Pixel-by-pixel colour correction is additionally provided for unprecedented control of image quality. Image content which is normally lost in dark areas can be revealed without damaging bright areas. Regions which are over-saturated can be brought within display range without affecting visibility in dark parts of the image.”

Technology developed by Apical is in use by major world manufacturers such as Sony, Olympus, Nikon and others. Slava is a physicist by education with strong background in math and in neuromorphic image processing.

Our seminars take place most Fridays at 4pm in room 112, Physics Building. Seminars are usually followed by a friendly session in a pub.
