"Mechanobiology: Why Cells Like To Take The Strain"
Abstract: Many of the tissues in our bodies are subjected to load during normal activity. The cells within these load-bearing tissues, including articular cartilage, are able to detect the force and alter their activity to maintain tissue function. The lecture will describe how the study of this process, termed mechanobiology, may ultimately help in the development of new ways of treating damaged cartilage.
Biography: David Lee is Professor of Cell and Tissue Engineering in the School of Engineering and Materials Science and Director of the QMUL Discipline Bridging Initiative. He has been engaged in research in mechanobiology and tissue engineering since 1991 and has published over 100 papers. He was recently awarded the prestigious Negma-Lerads International Prize for Mechanobiology of Cartilage and Chondrocytes.
A reception will follow the lecture
