Robotic Active Capsule Endoscope (RACE): advanced design, fabrication and control

Supervisor: Hasan SHAHEED
Apply by:15 June 2018

Description

The multi-disciplinary team of robotic scientists and academic surgeons based at QMUL have developed prototype locomotion mechanisms for a robotic capsule endoscope. The proposed PhD project will be built upon the previous work and will explore advanced novel concepts of imparting active locomotion to a robotic capsule endoscope suitable for use in human gastrointestinal tract to diagnose diseases. The student will be involved with the development and validation of different locomotion systems to be applied in a minaturised prototype of the robotic capsule endosope. This is a cross-disciplinary research project where the student will have ample opportunities to directly work with leading cancer clinicians working in the field of bowel cancer surgery and clinical endoscopy based at the prestigious Royal London hospital. The project will also bring in Industry exposure to the student through our existing industry research partner for the RACE project helping the student to develop knowledge in industry standard engineering designs, fabrication, and relevant MHRA regulatory applications. During the project the student will also interact with Queen Mary Innovation Ltd (QMI), QMUL’s technology transfer company responsible for the commercialisation and management of the Universities intellectual property including that of the RACE project. Any candidates wishing for further detailed technical information about the project are strongly encouraged to have an informal discussion with the principal supervisor, Dr Shaheed.
