Chemical Vapor Deposited Diamonds
Prof Zhiming Yu, Central South University, Changsha, China

Diamond and boron doped diamond (BDD) were chemically vapor-deposited on different substrates, such as Mo, W, Nb, W, MoRe and BeO, by using a hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) system. It is found that the growth rate of a Mo2C layer on Mo-Re alloy is higher than on pure Mo. And the metallic carbide layer may strongly affect the adhesion of the diamond films on the metallic substrates. The thermal conductivity of BeO coated with diamond film can be obviously promoted by from 10% to 48%, depending on the thickness of the diamond film.

Furthermore, a periodic magnetic field (PMF) obviously improves the nucleation and the growth of HFCVD diamond. And the diamond icosahedral single crystals (DISC) are frequently found in CVD process. The nucleus of the DISC is the dodecahedrane and as growth continued, the number of carbon atoms of the DISC is in a series of 20, 100, 280, ..., 20Σ(1+i)2, (i = 0, 1, 2, 3, …, n).

Zhiming studied his PhD on Metastable Growth of Diamond at Dept. of Materials Phys., Royal institute of technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden (1994-1998). He is a professor in materials science and engineering, at Central south university (CSU), Changsha, P. R. China since 1999. His main research area and interest is thin film diamond’s manufacture technology and applications. The applications include followings: diamond film as heat sink in devices, boron doped diamond (BDD) as an electron emitter, BDD as a sensor in electroanalytical measurements in biological media, and BDD as electrode in the catalytic degradation. He has 18 papers published on CVD diamond in recent 4 years.
