Multi-functional polymers and composite materials are bringing a new level of interaction with the world, sometimes inspired by living systems. We bring together research in growth of macroscopic shapes from single molecules, self-healing materials, shape-changing and re-processable materials, as well as artificial muscles which respond to various external stimuli. Including multiple functions in a single material allows materials themselves to replace whole devices, opening up the possibility of autonomous microscopic material robots not constrained by current device manufacturing techniques.
