In the latest World University Rankings, Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary, University of London were both ranked in the top 100 in the world. This corresponds to a national ranking of 11th in the UK for both engineering and materials science. This reflects a combination of factors including research citations for which Engineering was number 1 in the UK (13th in the World) and Materials Science was number 2 in UK (37th in the World), just behind University of Cambridge.
These latest league tables, along with excellent results in the National Students Survey, confirms QMUL as one of the top UK universities to study engineering and materials science.

Teaching Excellence
The 2011 National Student Survey (which asks students about their experiences at university) places Queen Mary equal first in London (among the major universities). Student satisfaction in the School of Engineering and Materials Science is now at 93 – 96% according to a nationwide survey of final year students. The 2011 National Student Survey questioned UK undergraduates on various aspects of their student experience and measured overall student satisfaction.
Materials at Queen Mary, University of London is number 1 in the UK in the NSS rankings, with Aerospace Engineering ranked 2nd and Mechanical Engineering 5th. All SEMS programmes have been rated as the best in London.

Queen Mary, University of London, has achieved overall student satisfaction of 88% to rank equal second in London with UCL, and ahead of King’s College London, LSE and Imperial College.
Our innovative flexible modular degrees give our students the freedom to choose modules and to determine the direction of their studies. Our students also benefit from the personal contact with teaching staff they receive through small group teaching and tutorials, where discussion and feedback is actively encouraged. Every one of our students is also allocated a Personal Tutor who will advise on both academic and non-academic issues.

The School of Engineering and Materials Science supports its students in progressing onto excellent future careers. We hold weekly Careers sessions on all aspects of securing suitable Graduate Careers. In addition to these sessions the SEMS Industrial Liaison Forum has now been held twice a year for three years and provides an opportunity for students, academics and industrial links to interact and further Queen Mary’s strong position and reputation within the engineering and materials science industries. All our Undergraduate Programmes are also available with Industrial Experience, meaning that students will benefit from invaluable work experience during their degree. All these initiatives are supported by a dedicated member of staff who has excellent industrial contacts and is familiar with careers related to the Engineering and Materials industries.
Our unique location between the City and Docklands means that some of the biggest companies in the world are located just a stone’s throw away from campus. The quality of Queen Mary’s students is well known to many blue-chip companies who advertise their training places with us as a result.
In addition to the careers advice our students receive from their academic tutors (many of whom will have links with employers themselves), our experienced Careers Team provide invaluable training on CV writing, interviews and tackling Assessment Centres. With over 1500 on-campus jobs and volunteer roles available through the Careers Team, our students are given the opportunity to build skills and work experience (and earn money!) alongside their studies.

Queen Mary Life
Set away from the Mile End Road and set beside the beautiful Regent's Canal, you would be forgiven for thinking that you were no longer in busy London when on campus. Our students live in the award winning Westfield Student Village, only a few minutes' walk from all of our social and teaching facilities. They can enjoy the tranquil surroundings of campus and yet can be in the centre of the City in minutes.
On campus, nothing is ever more than a few minutes away. Students living in the Westfield Student Village are only a five-minute walk from the Students' Union bar and any lecture theatres – perfect for those 9am starts!
Queen Mary also boasts one of the most active Students' Unions in London. They run over 100 clubs and societies and organise regular social events at the recently refurbished Drapers' Bar, so our students are never bored here. For the more athletically inclined, the recently opened campus Health and Fitness Centre offers a wide range of exercise classes and industry standard gym equipment for use by our students.
Our cosmopolitan student body is often described as the friendliest in London. With over 15,000 students on a single campus, our students can socialise with people from all walks of life; we are proud to boast a student body that is both national and international in its makeup. No one day is ever the same for our students and with so much to do on campus, it is no surprise that they are more than satisfied with their time here.

Studying in London
With an estimated 350,000 students in London who can choose from over 30,000 degree courses, London really is the ultimate student destination. Our students have access to an unparalleled array of academic resources including a wealth of world renowned libraries, museums and research institutes on their doorstep.
Our campus is very well linked by public transport with Mile End tube station (a five minute walk from campus) served by both the Central and District Lines. Our students can be on Oxford Street in just 15 minutes and at Liverpool Street in even less time. Just 10 minutes away is the Stratford Olympic Park and the recently opened Westfield Stratford City, Europe's largest urban shopping complex.
Our students are also just a stone's throw away from the delights of trendy East London. Whether it's celebrity spotting in the bars of fashionable Shoreditch, browsing independent designer stalls at Spitalfields Market, the tranquillity of Victoria Park or a curry on the world famous Brick Lane, our students are spoilt for choice.
