Overview
Medical engineering (also know as biomedical engineering, bioengineering or clinical engineering) concerns the use of engineering science and technology to solve real medical problems - for more details see 'What is Medical Engineering' at the bottom of this page.
The objective of the Medical Engineering degree programme at QMUL is to provide students with the fundamental training needed to become a professional engineer along with the specialist expertise in medical engineering needed to take advantage of career opportunities in medicine and the healthcare industries. Thus the degree provides an attractive option for students interested in the broad area of medical engineering as well as those seeking an alternative to medicine.
The Medical Engineering degree programme at QMUL is one of the largest in the country. We have over 100 new 1st year students into the broad area of Bioengineering which includes Medical engineering, Medical Materials and Dental Materials. Consequently we have a large number of specialist academic staff which enables the degree programmes to cover a broad range of medical engineering subjects reflecting our specialist expertise. In particular our key specialities in Medical Engineering at QMUL are as follows:
- Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine
- Orthopaedic Implants
- Biomechanics and Mechanobiology: from whole patients to single cells
- Diagnostic Systems and Instrumentation
- Biofluids (Experimental and Computational)

Minimum Entry Requirements:
BEng: 300 pts (BBB)
MEng: 360 pts (AAA)
Must include maths A-level and at least one science A-level (physics, biology, or chemistry).
