Every application to the School of Engineering and Materials Science is judged on its own merits. Below is guide to our normal entry requirements. Please note that this is only a guide and that offers can vary due to experience and details of qualifications.
A-levels
UCAS Tariff
- MEng: 360 points (from top 3 A-levels)
- BEng and BSc: 320 points (from top 3 A-levels)
NB We are happy to accept students who have re-taken their A-levels.
For all Engineering programmes
- Students must offer maths A-level and at least one science A-level (physics, chemistry or biology)
- For MEng programmes Maths A-level at grade A or above, for BEng programmes at grade B or above
- The third subject can be any subject excluding general studies and critical thinking
For all Materials programmes
- Students must offer two science A-level (maths, physics, chemistry and biology).
- For MEng programmes science A-level at grade A or above, for BEng programmes at grade B or above
- Psychology or Design Technology may be considered as the second science if the overall academic profile of the student is strong. This is decided on case by case basis taking the whole application into consideration.
- The third subject can be any subject excluding general studies and critical thinking
For Engineering, Design and Innovation
- Students must offer maths or physics (preferably maths).
- Students must offer one creative subject (art, product technology or design technology)
- The third subject can be any subject excluding general studies and critical thinking
For Materials and Design
- Students must offer two A-levels from maths, physics, chemistry and design technology.
- The third subject can be any subject excluding general studies and critical thinking
English Language
Students from non-English-speaking countries normally require IELTS (6.0 average) for admission. For more information on other English Language Qualifications.
International Baccalaureate
For all engineering programmes
- For MEng 36 points or above overall with maths and a science (physics, chemistry or biology) at higher level 6
- For BEng and BSc 34 points or above overall with maths and a science at higher level 6
For all materials programmes
- For MEng 36 points overall with two science subjects (maths, physics, chemistry or biology) at higher level 6
- For BEng and BSc 34 points or above overall with two science subjects at higher level 6
European Baccalaureate
For all MEng Programmes
- 85% or above including maths and science
For all BEng and BSc Programmes
- 80% or above including maths and science
French Baccalaureate
For all MEng Programmes
- 15/20 overall, with 15/20 in maths and science
For all BEng and BSc Programmes
- 14/20 overall, with 14/20 in maths and science
HE Advanced Diploma
- We accept the Engineering Diploma
- For MEng Grade A or above overall, with Maths A-level grade A or above
- For BEng and BSc Grade B or above overall, with Maths A-level grade B or above
BTEC Extended Diploma
For all engineering programmes
- Students will be considered with the following subjects only: Engineering, Engineering Science, Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
- Students must offer a maths A-level in addition to their BTEC.
- The offer will be DDD in the BTEC and B in the A-level
- Entry will be to BEng only
For all materials programmes
- Students will be considered with the following subjects only: Engineering, Engineering Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Applied Science
- Students must offer a science or maths A-level in addition to their BTEC.
- The offer will be DDD in the BTEC and B in the A-level
- Entry will be to BEng and BSc only
BTEC Diploma
For all engineering programmes
- Students will be considered with the following subjects only: Engineering, Engineering Science, Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
- Students must offer a maths A-level in addition to their BTEC.
- The offer will be D*D* in the BTEC and B in the A-level
- Entry will be to BEng only
For all materials programmes
- Students will be considered with the following subjects only: Engineering, Engineering Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Applied Science.
- Students must offer a science or maths A-level in addition to their BTEC.
- The offer will be D*D* in the BTEC and B in the A-level
- Entry will be to BEng and BSc only
BTEC 90 credit Diploma and BTEC Subsidiary Diploma
- These qualifications are acceptable only if offered with two appropriate A-levels (see notes on A-level above)
Access to HE Diploma
- We do consider applicants who offer Access to HE diploma (level 3) which are Physics and Mathematics based.
- Not acceptable for MEng programmes, will only be considered for BEng and BSc
- These qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis. Students should be achieving very high grades in their studies.
- All applications should be made before the UCAS deadline of the 15th of January.
- The typical offer is ‘Pass with a minimum of 45 level 3 credits including 30 credits at Distinction and 15 at Merit’. There may be additional requirements on specific subjects.
- All applications should be made before the UCAS deadline of the 15th of January.
- We do not accept applications from students on Access programmes after the deadline, or in clearing.
- Before a decision is made applicants will be invited to a computer based Maths test at Queen Mary, normally in April (as late as possible in the UCAS cycle). This Maths test is to assess whether the applicant's ability in maths is at the right level. Applicants are contacted shortly after the test with a decision on their application.
Foundation Programmes
- We do consider applicants who have completed foundation programmes related to Science and Engineering at other institutions, but we advise students to contact us before making an application to ensure that we can consider their foundation programme.
- Not acceptable for MEng programmes, will only be considered for BEng and BSc
- These qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis. Students should be achieving very high grades in their studies.
- All applications should be made before the UCAS deadline of the 15th of January.
- We do not accept applications from students on Foundation programmes after the deadline, or in clearing.
Advanced Entry
We do consider applicants who have successfully completed their first year at another institution, but entry into the second year is not always possible as courses often differ. We would need to see a full transcript, and the student would have to meet the current A-level (or equivalent) entry requirements for the programme. Any advanced entry applications must be made through UCAS before the 15th of January of the year of study.
