Undergraduate Admissions - Entry Requirements

Every application to the School of Engineering and Materials Science is judged on its own merits. Below is a guide to our normal entry requirements. Please note that this is only a guide and that offers can vary due to experience and details of qualifications.

A-levels

For Aerospace Engineering programmes:

  • MEng: AAA
  • BEng: AAB
  • Students must have Maths and Physics A-levels. Would consider Chemistry instead of Physics on a case by case basis.

For Chemical, Mechanical, Biomedical and Sustainable Energy Engineering programmes:

  • MEng: AAA
  • BEng: AAB
  • Students must have Maths and Physics or Chemistry A-levels

For Robotics Engineering programmes:

  • MEng: AAA
  • BEng: AAB
  • Students must have Maths and a second science A-level, preferably Physics or Chemistry, Electronics or Computing.

For Design, Innovation and Creative Engineering:

  • MEng: AAA
  • BEng: AAB
  • Two A-levels from Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Design Technology which must include Maths or Physics.  Art & Design would be considered on a case by case basis. If you do not have an A-level in a creative subject you should be able to demonstrate creativity by another method. It may be as a GCSE, or an activity outside school or by a portfolio.

For Materials Science and Engineering and Dental Materials programmes:

  • MEng: AAA
  • BEng and BSc: ABB
  • Students must have two subjects from Maths, Physics and Chemistry

For Biomaterials for Biomedical Sciences programmes:

  • MSci: AAA
  • BSc: ABB
  • Students must have two subjects from Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology

For Materials and Design:

  • MEng: AAA
  • BEng: ABB
  • Students must have two A-levels from Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Design Technology

For all SEMS programmes:

  • The third subject can be any subject excluding general studies and critical thinking

GCSEs

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or 4 or above to include English.

English Language

Students from non-English-speaking countries normally require IELTS (6.0 average) for admission. For more information on other English Language Qualifications.

International Baccalaureate

For all Engineering Programmes

  • MEng: 36 points or above overall, with 3 subjects at Higher Level with 6,6,5 points
  • BEng: 34 points or above overall, with 3 subjects at Higher Level with 6,6,5 points

For all Materials Programmes

  • MEng: 36 points or above overall, with 3 subjects at Higher Level with 6,6,5 points
  • BEng: 32 points or above overall, with 3 subjects at Higher Level with 6,5,5 points

For subject requirements please see details on A-level listing above, where an A-level subject is required the equivalent subjects would be required at Higher Level.

European Baccalaureate

  • For all MEng and MSci Programmes: 85% or above including maths and science
  • For all BEng and BSc Programmes: 80% or above including maths and science

French Baccalaureate

  • For all MEng and MSci Programmes: 14/20 overall, with 15/20 in maths and science
  • For all BEng and BSc Programmes: 14/20 overall, with 14/20 in maths and science

BTEC Extended Diploma pre 2016

For all Engineering programmes

  • Students will be considered from the following subjects only: BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering
  • Students must offer a Maths A-level in addition to their BTEC
  • The offer will be D*D*D in the BTEC and B in the A-level
  • Entry will  be to BEng only

For all Materials programmes

  • Students will be considered from the following subjects only: BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering and Applied Science
  • Students must offer an A level from Maths, Physics or Chemistry in addition to their BTEC
  • The offer will be D*D*D in the BTEC and B in the A-level
  • Entry will  be to BEng or BSc only

BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (RQF)

For all Engineering programmes

  • Students will be considered from the BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering
  • Students must offer a Maths A-level in addition to their BTEC
  • The offer will be DDD in the BTEC with Distinctions in: Engineering Principles, Engineering Product Design & Manufacture and Microcontroller Systems for Engineers and B in the A-level 
  • Entry will be to BEng only

For all Materials programmes

  • Students will be considered from the following subjects only: BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering
  • The offer will be DDD in the BTEC with Distinctions in: Engineering Principles, Engineering Product Design & Manufacture and Microcontroller Systems for Engineers
  • Entry will be to BEng or BSc only

Access to HE Diploma

  • We  consider applicants who offer Access to HE diploma (level 3) which are Physics and Mathematics based
  • Entry will normally be to BEng or BSc
  • These qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis. Students should be achieving very high grades in their studies.
  • All applications should be made before the UCAS deadline of the 15th of January
  • The typical offer is ‘Pass with a minimum of 45 level 3 credits including 33 credits at Distinction and 12 at Merit’. There may be additional requirements on specific subjects.

Foundation Programmes from Other Universities

  • We do consider applicants who have completed foundation programmes related to Science and Engineering at a recognized institution, but each application is considered on its merit.
  • Entry will normally be to BEng or BSc
  • These qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis. Students should be achieving very high grades in their studies.
  • All applications should be made through UCAS before the 15th January UCAS deadline.

Advanced Entry

  • We do consider applicants who have successfully completed their first year at another institution, but entry into the second year is not always possible as courses often differ.
  • We need to see a full transcript and reference from your current place of study.
  • The student would have to meet the current A-level (or equivalent) entry requirements for the programme.
  • Any advanced entry applications must be made through UCAS, with a reference from your current University before the 15th of January of the year of study.

Other qualifications may also be acceptable and will be assessed individually. We accept a broad range of overseas qualifications. Consult our country/region specific information to find out whether you have the right qualifications. If your qualifications are not listed, please contact us for further information.
