Prof. Fukahori joined Bridgestone after graduation from Kyusyu University in Japan (Bachelor and Master course) in 1970. He was seconded to the rubber group in the Department of Materials at Queen Mary as a Phd student in 1974. After completing his phd, he returned to Bridgestone and engaged in the research and deveropment of rubbers and rubber products for 30 years. His research fields spread over from molecular behavior of polymers to fracture, fatigue, wear and reinforcement of elastomers. In particular, he worked on the development of laminated bearings made from layers of steel plates and rubber which can be used to isolate buildings and houses from earthquake damage. Thus preventing damage and saving the lives of their occupants.
