Expertise: X-ray Crystallography, X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, Rietveld structural refinement, calcium phosphates (biological and synthetic).

My first degree is in chemistry (mainly physical) after which I went on to gain a M.Sc. in X-ray crystallography at Birkbeck College, followed by a Ph.D. which involved characterisation of amorphous catalysts using synchrotron radiation. I helped develop the "Paris-Edinburgh" high pressure cell for neutron diffraction, at ISIS at the Rutherford Appleton laboratory, which took the upper limit on high pressure experiments with neutrons from 3 GPa to routinely beyond 12 GPa. I then became involved with working with Prof. J.C. Elliott, at Queen Mary, on calcium phosphates, apatites and the mechanism of the formation of caries (tooth decay).
