I completed my chemistry studies at the University of Bucharest with a diploma in Chemistry. Afterwards I moved to Germany to undertake a PhD in the field of “Molecularly Imprinted Polymers”. Upon a successful completion of my PhD studies I was certain of my desire to continue with an academic career path, as demonstrated when joining the Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPIKG) in 2005 within the department of Colloid Chemistry as a postdoctoral fellow.
After only one year, in 2006 I was promoted to a group leader position. In Germany, such a position allows to develop an independent research group for a period of 5-7 years.
At the MPIKG I have developed and brought new perspectives to the topic “Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC)” and in addition worked on chromatographic applications using thermo-responsive polymers.
I had my “Habilitation” examination in July 2013 and since January 2013 I have joined the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University in London as a reader in Materials Science.
In my spare time I enjoy outdoor sports ( running, cycling) as well as electronic music.
