PhD Research Studentships

Soft Matter and Flow in Porous Media for Energy Engineering applications

Supervisor: Edo BOEK
Apply by:31 August 2017

Description

A fully funded Research Studentship is available in the Soft Matter and Flow in Porous Media research group in the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London. The main objective of the PhD project is to develop computational and / or experimental methods to understand the multi-scale physics and chemistry of the flow of complex fluids in confinement, such as micro-fluidic geometries and porous media. This includes active matter (living cells), two-phase and reactive flow, with applications in energy storage, renewable energy, carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), improved battery design and clean fossil fuels. One particular research question is whether we can tune the collective behaviour of active matter to self-assemble artificial tissues, create self-pumping micro-fluidic devices or design new bio-inspired materials. The main goal is to predict the macroscopic behaviour of such systems from the underlying micro- and mesoscopic principles in direct comparison with experiments.

Computational tools available from soft matter and statistical physics include lattice-Boltzmann (GPU and CPU), Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo and Multi-Particle Collision Dynamics simulations.

Experimental tools include micro-fluidics, microscopy, rheology and X-ray micro-tomography.

The research may be carried out in collaboration with the labs of Mike Cates and Daan Frenkel at the University of Cambridge. For more details and references, see http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/people/esb30/
