Advanced Numerical Study of Ultrasound Enhanced Heat Transfer

Supervisors: Xi JIANG and Yi SUI
Apply by:31 May 2017

Description

Advanced physical modelling and numerical simulation can be used to guide experimental work and to obtain a deep understanding on the problem under investigation. Ultrasound can be used to enhance the heat transfer near solid boundaries through the phenomenon of acoustic streaming, involving vortices and sometimes turbulence. Using high-fidelity numerical simulations based on high-order numerical schemes, this project will study the characteristics of ultrasound induced fluid flow and the possible e?ects of acoustic streaming on cooling / heat transfer intensi?cation. The project is focussed on flow physics study with relevance to a number of novel applications including flow control and thermal management of practical systems. The applicants should have a good Honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline such as Engineering or Mathematics. The successful candidate will need to have an academic background in fluid mechanics and strong analytical/computational skills. Programming experience will be an advantage
