Advanced Elastomers used in Sealing Applications under Extreme Conditions (funded by Cameron - a Schlumberger Company)

Supervisor: James BUSFIELD
Apply by:30 April 2017

Description

In the oil and gas industry extensive use is made of advanced elastomer materials for static and dynamic sealing applications. These elastomeric seals operate in hostile environments such as either very high or very low temperatures, at potentially very high pressures whilst being subjected to chemical attack. This project will couple materials characterisation and modelling to help predict more reliably the lifetime performance of these speciality elastomer components. The project is the third funded PhD project over the last 3 years with a Schlumberger company at QMUL. The student will work extensively with the sponsor on real industrial applications and be invited to spend time in Houston, USA. They will also be embedded within the Soft Matter Group in the School of Engineering and Materials Science at QMUL under the supervision of Prof James Busfield.
