Drop Coalescence, Pinch-off and Splashing

Supervisor:
Apply by:29 February 2016

Description

The core of this project is devoted to the study of the formation, impact and coalescence of droplets and looks to overcome existing limitations of theoretical and experimental methods. In particular, the project will look at the breakup of fluids, the dynamics of liquid surfaces, and the impact and motion of liquids onto solid surfaces. All these topics are important in several practical contexts and have become major themes of research in fluid mechanics. The work is predominantly experimental, but collaborations with theoretical and numerical groups will be established to improve or validate current methods.

The project aim is to study the thinning neck formed prior drop break-off of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. This study will provide a set of validated rules to determine the true time of droplet break-off. The project will also investigate the thinning and breakup of liquids to characterise surface tension effects in the microsecond time-scale. The project also seeks to explore the contact angle dynamics of surface/liquid interfaces in motion and to look at the effect of substrate inhomogeneity and imperfections on the dynamics of spreading and receding liquids to comprehend the dynamics of impacting droplets.

The successful candidate will have a degree in a relevant subject (Physics, Engineering, or similar); experience of working in a laboratory; an ability to conduct experiments and carry out projects, analyse the results and understand the processes.

Experience in Particle Image velocimetry, high speed imaging, data acquisition and instrument control would be an advantage but not essential as training will be provided. Masters level study in an appropriate area (Fluid Mechanics, Physics) would be advantageous.
