Description

PhD Studentship: 3D printing of molecular patterns within hydrogel biomaterials Applications are invited for a PhD student in the laboratory of Dr Alvaro Mata at the School of Engineering and Materials Science and the Institute of Bioengineering at Queen Mary University of London. The project is funded by an ERC Starting Grant and is centred on the development of a novel 3D printing process to pattern functional molecules within 3D hydrogel biomaterials for tissue engineering applications. The successful candidate will have a good Honours degree in physics, materials science, or electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering. Experience working with electrophoresis, electrical fields, and electrical conduction through soft matter is highly preferable. Expertise working with hydrogel materials and cell and tissue culture would be advantageous. As a member of the prestigious Russell Group, QMUL is one of UK’s leading research-focused higher education institutions, where multidisciplinary research is carried out at the highest level. Access to fume-hoods and appropriate bench space as well as all the standard chemistry equipment will be available in our new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities where the candidate will be located. The Mata Laboratory has recently purchased a peptide synthesizer and preparatory and analytical HPLCs, and has access to a variety of state-of-the-art equipment including CD, DLS, ITC, FTIR, NMR, UV-Vis, SEM, TEM, confocal microscopy, and cell and tissue culture facilities among others. The project provides a fantastic opportunity in a dynamic and highly interdisciplinary group that provides an optimum environment for conducting high impact cutting edge research, collaborating with world leading groups, and have real impact in patients’ lives.
