IOB PhD Studentship: Molecular dynamics computer simulation of biological systems

Institute of Bioengineering, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) The QMUL Institute of Bioengineering is a new cross-faculty initiative bringing together over 50 academics from the faculties of Medicine & Dentistry and Science & Engineering. The Institute provides a focus for ground-breaking research aimed at the development of new medical therapeutics and diagnostics to meet the key healthcare challenges of the 21st century. Project Details: This project will focus on molecular dynamics computer simulation of peptides, particularly in relation to self-assembly and interaction with lipid membranes. The project will be exclusively computational and will be conducted within the research group of Dr Mario Orsi (http://www.orsi.sems.qmul.ac.uk). Simulation results will be validated in collaboration with the experimental group of Dr Helena Azevedo (http://www.sems.qmul.ac.uk/staff/?h.azevedo). Candidates must have a good degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, chemistry, or related disciplines. Programming skills and experience with computer simulation are highly desirable. Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for this studentship opportunity is a good honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline.
  • If English is not your first language, you will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5+ overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in all sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking).
  • Candidates are expected to start in (Semester ).
  • SEMS and Principal-funded studentships: this studentship arrangement covers home tuition fees and provides an annual stipend for up to three years (currently set at the 2023/24 stipend rate of £20,622 pa)
