PhD Studentship (Home/EU Students Only): Non linear acoustics - structure interaction simulation

Description

A highly skilled PhD student is sought for a challenging PhD project of 36 months to work on simulating non-linear sound propagation and its interaction with structure as applied for generating energy using fusion. The student is expected to implement numerical algorithms of wave propagation and cavitation, produce analysis and work closely with the industrial sponsor. The student will also have the opportunity to spend some time with the industrial sponsor. The successful candidate must have a first class degree in mechanical/aerospace engineering or an equivalent field. He/she must have deep knowledge in compressible fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, numerical analysis and programming (C/C++/Fortran), backed by documented formal training in these areas. Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for this studentship opportunity is a good honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline.
  • If English is not your first language, you will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5+ overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in all sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking).
  • Candidates are expected to start in (Semester ).
  • SEMS and Principal-funded studentships: this studentship arrangement covers home tuition fees and provides an annual stipend for up to three years (currently set at the 2023/24 stipend rate of £20,622 pa)
