"Constitutive Models for Rubber III"
Author(s): J.J.C. Busfield and A.H. Muhr
Journal: Balkema (Lisse, The Netherlands)
The papers included in this volume are the proceedings of the third European Conference on Constitutive Models for Rubber. The editors would like to express their gratitude to D. Besdo, R.H. Schuster and J. Ihlemann for organising the very successful Hanover conference two years ago and establishing the viability of a series of conferences on the theme outlined in the foreword to the Vienna conference. Once again we have commissioned Balkema to produce the volume, this time with an index covering all three volumes so far in the series. There has been a significant increase in the number of contributions, from 37 in Vienna, 35 in Hanover, to 54 in this volume. We are pleased to see a movement towards implementation in Finite Element Analysis of models presented in previous meetings, and a broadening of the scope to include lifetime prediction as well as magneto- and electro-sensitive elastomers. We would like to express our thanks to all the authors, not least for their patience with our editorial comments on their work and the trials of the template. We have aimed at a clear, coherent body of work together with the two previous volumes, and hope that all involved will agree that it is worth the pain. We had intended to opt for English spelling, being a European venture, but as few outside of France, Ireland and Great Britain complied we permitted non-uniformity of spelling style, it having no impact on comprehension. We have preferred the term Fletcher-Gent effect to Payne effect for the reduction in dynamic stiffness as the amplitude is increased, justified by publication date (compare 1953 Trans. Institution of the Rubber Industry 29: 266-280 to 1962 J. Applied Polymer Science 6: 57-63), and are pleased to see the Mullins effect written without an apostrophe, the name being used as an adjective. It remains to thank K.Akutugawa, D.Besdo, P.Buckley, R.de Borst, L.Dorfmann, A.N.Gent, M.Klueppel, H.Mang, W.V.Mars, R.W.Ogden, H.Rothert, A.G.Thomas, O.H.Yeoh and J.M.Vergnaud, the members of the Scientific Committee, for their support, to D. Witt for compiling the index, to C.H. Pedley for her help throughout the organisation of the Conference, to the ECCMR 2003 sponsors (Instron, Queen Mary University of London, Abaqus Inc., MSC Software, Zentech International Ltd., Cooper Tire and Rubber Company, BRMA, Axel Products Inc. and Columbian Chemicals Co.) whose generous contribution has helped subsidise the publication costs of this book and to the staff at Swets & Zeitlinger publishers.
