The dynamic mechanical properties of particulate-filled rubbers are examined within the small strain linear viscoelastic region using a free oscillation technique. Values of tanδ derived from experimental damping oscillations were found to be independent of strain as would be expected for a linear viscoelastic response. However, a significant non-linear dependence of tanδ upon filler loading was observed. This filler dependence demonstrated that a loss mechanism other than that of the inherent rubber viscoelasticity occurs during sample deformation even at very small strains. Potential mechanisms behind this energy loss such as interfacial slippage between the rubber matrix and filler particle and the absorbed rubber layer theory are discussed in the context of these findings.
