Research Projects
The research project forms a major component of the Biomedical Engineering degree course providing an excellent oportunity for students to participate in the internationally leading research taking place within the School of Engineering and Materials Science. Students work on a Biomedical Engineering related project supervised by a member of academic staff and intergrating within the wider research team. Our MSc students have access to our excellent laboratory facilities enabling them to conduct cutting edge research leading to publication at scientific conferences and in peer reviewed journals.
Here are just a few examples of recent Biomedical Engineering research projects:
Bioengineering in Urology
- Encrustation of urethral stents and the influence of urine composition
- Evaluation of laser fibreoptics for urological surgery
- Development of artificial kidney stones for investigation of lithotripsy
Cell and Tissue Engineering
- Loading of cell-seeded constructs for tissue engineered cartilage repair
- The influence of oxygen on the behaviour of osteoarthritic cartilage cells
- The role of primary cilia in cell response to biomaterials
Biosensors and Nanomedicine
- Development of enzyme based biosensors
- Nanowave: heating nanoparticles by electromagnetic wave and its biomedical applications
Tissue Biomechanics
- Effect of collagen on the mechanical properties of soft biological tissues
Orthopaedic Implant Analysis
- Accelerated wear protocols for understanding clinical wear in modern hip prostheses
- Investigating the deformation behaviour of press-fit metal acetabular components used in hip replacements
- Measuring ion release from large diameter metal-on-metal hip bearings
- Improvement of wear and corrosion resistance of metal on metal hip joint prostheses
Clinical Biomechanics
