Research at QMUL linking the School of Engineering and Materials Science and the Neuroscience Centre at the School of Medicine and Dentistry has investigated the mechanism of mechanically induced injury in peripheral neurons. Student, Stacy Gladman, was awarded her PhD having successfully passed her viva.

Stacy who is supervised by Prof Priestly, Prof Michael-Titus and Dr Knight, has recently published two excellent journal papers exploring the mechanism of neuronal injury to mechanical strain or lack of oxygen and showing that poly unsaturated fatty acids protect neurons against these injuries.

These studies open the way to exciting new therapeutic approaches for treating and even preventing nerve injury.
