Skills and Employability Week 4-8 March 2024

10:30 - 12:00 Mandatory EMS599 (Y2) Lecture: IBM presents 'An Introduction to Design Thinking' and Consulting Challenge Kick off session
Where: Virtual - ibm.webex.com/meet/j0nnymac
Description: Jon McNamara (IBM Master Inventor and UK University Lead) will be providing a workshop on the principles of ‘Design Thinking’ and IBM's approach to problem-solving and delivering solutions to clients. You'll learn methods such as ‘Empathy Maps, Ideation and Prioritisation to generate solutions. Following this, you’ll receive access to complete All IBM’s Design Thinking Practitioner Badge – an industry recognised qualification

Participants will then be invited to opt into an optional but highly recommended 'Design Thinking Challenge' which will see you work in multi-disciplinary groups over the week and present their proposed solution back to IBM on March 8th (15:00 – 16:30).

10:30 - 11:30 Sci & Eng Careers Workshop: Graduate Jobs outside of Grad Schemes

Description: Job hunting can be difficult in the best of times, and it can feel like graduate jobs all have application deadlines before you've even got your books back out in September. However, most jobs for graduates are not on these grad schemes, and they don't have early deadlines that seem to close before you even knew they were open. In this session, learn more about finding the 90% of jobs that aren't graduate schemes.

Description: In this hands on session, work through a range of psychometric tests with support and practical tips from a Careers Consultant. These include Situational Judgement Tests, personality tests, and abstract reasoning.

15:30 - 17:00 Sci & Eng Careers Week: Interview Bootcamp
Where: GO Jones LG1
Description: In this hands-on and interactive interview session, you’ll have the opportunity to practice your interview skills. We'll be looking at all types of interview questions used from motivational, competency, strengths and situational - teaching you how you can pre-empt questions that may arise and craft responses.

Description: This session will be dedicated to understanding how to use LinkedIn to research career possibilities, expand your network and search for opportunities. This will be an interactive session where we will be using the platform as much as possible so if you can please set up a basic profile before you come you will have a great head-start.
